yesterday's gospel sunday service had the sermon titled 'Is there life before death?'. judging from the title i could already guess that the sermon would be talking about how to lead a fulfilling life on earth before you die. and also given that the verse was John 10:10 'I (Jesus) have come that they may have life and have it to the full', confirmed my thoughts on what the sermon would be talking about.
indeed the speaker was talking about how humans were created with this God-shaped vacuum within our hearts that only God can fill. i've heard this many times before and i know it full well in theory. but i actually only started to experience this probably around last year. if you think about it logically, we are created by God and so it makes sense that when God created us, He made us to have this special vacuum within us that only He can be in. well, as egoistic as it might sound, we've no right to question God's motives. He is THE Creator and it is only right that the works of His creation(us) worship Him and seek Him.
i've mentioned that i've heard the thing about God shaped vacuum many times but i always wondered what that would mean in real life. i mean what's with this hole in our heart thing anyway. i used to wonder what it was like to be filled in this hole and really live life to the full. and no, i don't think yolo is the way to go. yolo's just a catchy phrase that people use as an excuse to do crazy things. so anyway, back to the question of what does it mean to live life to the full? i remember John 10:10 was on the 2011's yz camp shirt and we used that shirt for street e to ask people what they thought life is. at that time, i found it difficult to explain to people the meaning of the verse when i myself hadn't really experienced it yet.
over the course of time, i can't pinpoint a date and time, i started to grasp the concept of living life to the full because of Jesus. frankly speaking, it's an indescribable feeling. it's just this inner joy that will make your life complete. material wealth, friends, family, health, achievements, all these things bring happiness but they don't bring joy. my cru dg was discussing about the difference between happiness and joy. happiness is an outward expression of your feeling but joy is more of something that comes from within. yup, so only by accepting Jesus into your life and surrendering your life to God will one be able to experience this joy. and somehow this joy will just allow you to lead a full life.
i really hope that everyone can one day experience this joy, not just non-christians but even christians. because i know that it took me a while to experience it even though i was already a christian. it's my hope and prayer that my dg girls will truly experience God filling up their God-shaped vacuum.
i'm thankful that i've been given the chance to experience it. i'm thankful for being able to comprehend what it means to be living a meaningful life. here's a verse that i used to just know as head knowledge but over the years, have been able to really believe in it and know what it means. 'Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you' Matthew 6:33
till then,
J.
